Sugar Season

maple sap

The sap starts flowing,
so dilute
with just a faint taste
Do you taste the minerals
and elements
the sugar maple pulls up
from the soil, stones and ledges.
so special
Sugar Season.

The sap is boiled down to make syrup.
It is a remedy for natural healing.
I witnessed the positive effects of syrup on an elderly man
who became confused and depressed after surgery.
he  had it at every meal, and with gin.
he was 90.
He went home and never returned.
