Same snow, different year

Snow, Monkton, Vermont, stock photo

I know, I know,
We should live in the moment
today

and
take pictures
today
or
tomorrow when tomorrow is today

This time of year, late January
1/2 way through winter
it is easy to get photo-fatigue,
kind of a mental white out.

I think these were from President's day 3 years ago.
We got about 6 inches so far of fluffy snow even in the valley,
Expected to go to 50+ wednesday,
then freezing again. The second January thaw.

Just knowing that, makes it hard to take pictures
when I should be shoveling.

Snow

Snow coming

6-15 inches

predicted in the VT/NY Champlain Valley
maybe more in the mountains
depending on where in the Northeastern US you are.
So the Ski industry is salivating, the plow truck drivers are resting up,
we are taking what comes and rolling with it as much as we can.

Christmas was nice and quiet,
quieter without Mom on the phone,
recapping where everyone was and what they were doing.
Every Christmas forever was connected with Mom somehow,
We actually trimmed the tree before
so I could tell her on our Sunday call.

When we visited once,
Mom told me, "I hope you are taking notes!"
It surprised me, said with almost a threatening tone.
She was always so tolerant of circumstance gone south,
plans gone awry, expectations failed.
Now I realize she was a victim of institutionalization,
even my ultra tolerant Mom. Even the strong but quiet woman
who bore 7 children without a whine or a wimper.
Reminding me we have to completely revamp our eldercare before the baby boomers need it.
Oh wait, too late.

First step,
At Adult day programs, call it the "Club", serve faux drinks,
replace all the Glenn Miller with Steve Miller and
look at truly multigenerational centers.
Next step. Do you know it is up to each of us to create the milieu that meets the needs of our individual community? I like the idea of a virtual adult day,
we could attend from home and avoid the bumpy upland travel.

Finally, thought I would post a storm photo from 2010.

Snow Images

Snow images past.

Has been relatively mild in VT
and we are thankful for every
warmer day since fuel prices threaten lives again
this year.
The fuel prices, an eerie phenom
whereby
big corporations and local dealers
gouge poor and needy and middle class & businesses, farms too.

why is fuel more expensive even though less refined than gas?
Why is all of it so high and why to politicians subsidize the program
with liheap without considering
someone is making a big profit?
no answers...

keep warm,
Vermont is open for ski-ing

Monster week

The Snow Monster came and gave us the heaviest snow and this delayed back pain thing.
Other people awoke at 4 am this morning, days later than the shoveling with what feels like a bowie knife in the back to the hilt.
Or was it the MonSter? did it do it?
I feel it's claws sometimes as many of us do, to make me remember what I have.
Today blowing off steam to a selectman in town, hoping someday I may help make law that
limits what a town can punish you with for paying prop taxes late: fees, penalties, having to pay the town's legal cost as a percentage of what is due. Unconstitutional, but the selectman had confidence it was all in stone and fair. Still working on that.
Then the rain was like a monster claw on the driveway, now bare that Fred shoveled most of.
So in spite of the pains, trials, and difficulties, it has been a good week.
March is a hopeful month to me, the beginning of the zodiac, appropriately, time for new changes.
I wanted to mention a singer again who was recently married.
Carolynwonderland.com
married A. Whitney Brown and we enjoyed seeing the pictures and hearing CW sing her vows.
Not a dry eye, beautiful photos.
You really need to check out her music which is why I started to write this entry
for
Friday Night Music.
Freitag nacht Musik for our international friends...

(herrad started me doing this...)

The big one

The big one, March 7th.
Snow stopped sometime last night.
Fred shoveled most of this and I helped 10 percent, maybe 9.
We still need some plowing but can get out now.
I really contemplated a lot, as my muscles burned from shoveling,
tossing, shoving, slicing, cutting this thick, frosting like heavy
wet snow with water logging, packed densely
showing us we really have no power compared with
Mother nature.
I breathed deeply the fresh air and enjoyed the sunshine and
relative mildness in the 20's kind of day.
We hear the snow melting under the road,
running under the rocks.
Frustrated we could not go to work again and thankful Fred has broken through
to civilization finally, today at 3 pm.
Time for advil.

Pathways

We had an unexpected nor-easter day before yesterday. We got about 8 inches and and still getting
snow showering and blowing around. Light, fluffy stuff this time so much more tolerable.
I got home early after getting my 20 pounds of remnant fleece at the mysterious fedex ground site.
I trudged through the snow to get the recycling barrel which we call the refrigerator, because it is about the size of one. I loaded the garbage barrel inside it and dragged it up the hill.
The fresh air was nice. About 20 degrees F.
I proceeded to shovel a bit and pretended I was doing wii downhill skiing.
The sun set early about 4:30 and I realized it would be even earlier for a few more weeks.
Heading back to the house I saw a weird path, like I had shoveled a pathway to the front of the house.
I didn't shovel that.
Then I remembered. The recycling bin had carved a perfect path in the fluffy snow.
The cats will appreciate that, I thought,
then went in and got warmed by the fire.
