Nurses in the Know: The History and Future of Advance Directives

Clearly a response to Covid 19 outbreak and concerns over healthcare resources, UK Citizens with Disability received a letter asking them about signing a DNR, Do Not Resuscitate Order. My opinion is that’s what Government Controlled Healthcare is all about. I suggested my friends there review USA laws and how they came about. Found this great article about everything I was looking for.

Hope y’all are safe and healthy. Meg

For Healthcare Workers and Others... Recognizing the Red Flags of Sex Trafficking

Recognizing the Red Flags of Sex Trafficking: You work in the ED. Tina, a young woman in her early 20’s, has just been brought back to Exam Room 8. You go in to introduce yourself and see that she has come with complaints consistent with a UTI. Tina is lying in bed, appears malnourished, and doesn’t make eye contact. She is with another woma...

For the Nurses #Nurse

I woke up again,
Third time’s a charm,
Coffee ☕️ pot on,
Fred dutifully fills the night before,
Knowing Mary goes better with coffee ☕️

I usually post my daily blog posts
The night before
I slipped again today,
Kept forgetting.

Coffee, then Twitterverse
A Nurse reminded me of ICU Days
I got nostalgic,
It was the Best of Jobs...
And the Worst Of Jobs...
Best of Patients, Families, Doctors,
And the Worst.

So as I lazily tweet and Fishdom level 527,
I’ll send this Combo Blogger Posting subject ICU
Out to the Nurses,
Who save lives,
Ease your pain,
Hold your hand,
And see you get safely home,
Whichever home...

Nurses

Nurses

In the News,
Never Good to nurses,
That Press,
Hungry for a slimy story,
Conflict,
Conspiracy,
Cons,
Contrary
To that personality,
The kindly Nurse,
The Comforting hand on your shoulder.

Having worked with my share of
Prime Donnas,
Bossy Doctors,
Sometimes abusive in their perfection.
Blaming anyone for their patient who goes south,
At least the Doctors often were hard on us because they cared.

This story is more about when a power,
Not a Doctor,
Tries to Take charge of a Nurse's patient.

This nurse said No.
I'm with her. 😎

Link to great article about this Nurse...

Nursing circa 1980 ish

Nursing

1980-ish

I graduated from Nursing school in 1980.
Most of what I learned about nursing was learned on the job,
The classroom gave me the foundation,
My protocol, My ethical framework.

When you start out,
You must develop your own expectations.
Working for hospitals for 15 years,
It took me too long to learn that lesson.

They said, go there, do that,
Don't question (I did anyway),
Don't complain (I did anyway),
Don't Think...

In the early 1980's, several diseases emerged:
HIV and Hepatitis C.
Both transmitted by blood and body fluids.
Both were labelled as mysteries until more became known,
As more people died, got sick.

As nurses on the front line of the sickest,
We had no protective gear back then.
We had to even nag for gloves.
Chemo waste went down the drain.
Radiation I have been exposed to: never measured...
Trust me to say it was a lot when you want none.

I stabbed myself with plenty of dirty needles,
Carelessy re-capping needles,
fumbling in the dark to restart an IV,
Finding a mystery needle in bed linens,
Always sharp end first.

Even new machines,
No prep,
No manual,
Sometimes missing an essential piece.

We had no time to complain and no one to complain to,
The patient took front seat,
The doctor needed our support,
I'm the only RN on tonight for 27 patients.
Neurology/Male Urology and overflow from other units.
An LPN to give meds and aided to turn, clean people and check vital signs.
The doctors home in bed or over in the doctor residence hall.
There is a finesse to calling doctors,
Especially at night.
You had to learn who wanted to be called,
When a resident doctor should be called.
Ultimately the nurse is responsible,
hopefully.

So with all the hooplah about Ebola,
I will say there are contagious diseases which pose more threats to spreading. Like Flu, Meningitis, HPV.
Many diseases have immunizations.

As I look back to the day when suddenly we admitted young wasted away thin, sick looking men who came for a work up.
When HIV was finally discovered to be the culprit, People became hysterical. No one wanted this disease.
Non A, Non B Hepatitis became Hepatitis C. Another mystery.
No special precautions at first....

Universal Precautions came from this experience.
If you touch blood or body fluids, anticipate and wear gloves,
protective clothing.
Wash hands,
Stay a good distance away from a cougher.
Calm down.
Grow up, nurse.
We all had to take responsibility at some point.
Do not blame nurses, or doctors or patients.
Ebola is a virus.

Nurses, Moms, and a YT link to the Incredible Nurse, Blues Legend Alberta Hunter

This is the last day of Nurse's Week.
Today is Florence Nightingale's birthday.
This is also Mother's Day, my first without Mom, who wanted to be a nurse but children were there and opportunity was not.
My BFF Donna thought she would be the nurse and then I became one.
Katie was a nurse too.
If it were not for Paula, a friend from the "old neighborhood,"
I would not know about another warm and wonderful nurse, Alberta Hunter.
Famous Blues singer, songwriter to nurse back to the stage,
where she clearly shines, shines.
I cannot tell the story like Paula did, with that thick New York City accent and the gestures.
Will work on that one later.
To the point, Alberta was a blues singer who got a nursing degree.
She worked past the age of mandatory retirement because the hospital did not know how old she really was. She was 80. She went back to singing and as you can see, she never missed a beat.
I can see her holding a dying mother's hand and stroking their shoulder.
She reminds me of my friend BJ in her physical strength. Do not underestimate how hard this woman has worked. She is originally from Memphis. Like so many others greats and legends...
This is dedicated to Alberta Hunter.
Will finish this story later.

Nurse's Week

Happy Nurse's Week!
Here is a poem for my co-workers, friends, and all who care for those in need.

Thought I would be an engineer,

Working with things, materials, the way things fit,
The way they work, and earn a living that men make.
Then I went to the school and the math was all wrong,
What did the numbers mean?
Where was the human-ness? To all these numbers?
And my classes got mixed up, was it a mistake or providence?
My English teacher was supposed to teach us technical writing,
Words without feelings.
But he hated that idea,

One at a time,
He thought he would teach us tech-ies

Literature,

The kind with people and feelings,

The kind where I studied the Lady of the Lake and King Arthur,

Deep in the stacks of U of I,

Where I got lost and wandered away from the engineering I had so set my sights on,
And came via a long circuitous fashion

To the mysterious science, the miraculous profession

Where you get to hold another human’s hand

And say,

I hope you feel better.
