Music Appreciation & Searching for Cafe Society

Music Appreciation & Search for Cafe Society

There was no question that my old office mate Paula was leading me again and again to Greenwich Village. Not The Village of Today, really. The Village of the 1960's. The time when poets and musicians couch surfed, feeding at bars and cafes, the tab covered by a song or a promise.

Great article about the early village:

The reason I got back on this subject was Richard Barone is making and album of early days...
Like a Cafe Society sound track...
Get in on this.
It is historic.

For Dad's Playlist (& mine too, meg)

For Dad's Playlist...

been reading lately about creating your playlist,
when you live to be a hundred
by being so darn healthy :)
hopefully you can hear and see your playlist...
{will they have a wire you just plug in?}

love this video link from YT
the parents took us to Chattanooga and we went on a cog railway.

So sad we lost Glenn Miller in his prime...

searching for Cafe Society,
this is a perfect number.
If only he had come back from the war and kept going.

Les Paul - Sleepwalk

Searching for Cafe Society
                              Cafe Societe,

Finding another headliner for the club...

another favorite singer I never heard before today,
 Lalah Hathaway.

Then this beauty by Les Paul appeared to me.
His love of the music is needing to be shared.

Les & Lalah this Friday in the north country.
70 f.,  breezy, sunny.

Friday Nacht Musik

For this friday,
the official YT video of this great song...

Holly Williams
Wow...

*********************************************************************************

Then an aside, As I search for Cafe Society, Cafe Societe
in a world so big,
made smaller by the likes of twitter.
I know tweeting is lost on many,
perhaps not seeing the power of 140 characters,
in a moment of time.
My favorite scene in It's a Wonderful Life is when young George Bailey reads the sign up on the wall...
Ask Dad...He'll know what to do...So True, Frank Capra, a beautiful human moment,
reading an ad that changes everything.
Some days, like yesterday, when I got a retweet from another Tweeter,
It was an affirmation,
not some evil conspiracy, trap or devil's hand.
I felt like it was the beginning of Cafe Society, virtual communication,
sharing without intimidation or fear.
No secondary motives.
just words.

Friday Night Musik

Friday Night Musik

And searching for Cafe Society, Societe,

Twittersphere

Virtualized Society,

Yesterday waa still searching for the right selection for Friday.

Tuned into imus on WABC live (on line)
 Broadcasting From NYC.
Heard this beautiful tune from Elton John, link from yt
Distilling the spirit of NYC.
This concert just after 9/2011,
A powerful concert.
Currently Spanish Harlem suffers after an explosion
Eclipsed by the missing plane,
Like the mudslide, too real, too sad, victims too poor.

My mind drifted to Jesse, always, thinking of NYC.
Sometimes imaging him and me catching a bagel & lox at a deli
While he triple parked.

I had gone over some thoughts about why New Yorkers
Are cautious twitterers.
Weiner is number 1...his faux pas exposed the exposure,
Twitter likewise reflects the society you live in.

Better table this and get posting...
Happy Friday!

Friday Nacht Musik

Friday Nacht Musik

Searching for Cafe Society....

Was thinking how I started using Twitter, and how it was Guy Forsyth who had a twitter account on his card. We saw him at Levon's twice with Carolyn Wonderland & band.
So I fought to find some music that was there.
Rosetta kept saying...let me do that number at the train station again,
She felt like a princess and played...well she showed the guys how to do it.

So decided to put 2 links from YT for Friday.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe (yes, playing again...)
Guy Forsyth.

The Past....oh so lovely foundation of rock & Roll
Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
The Present...Guy Forsyth....and all his cool friends...

And one more for the future of musik...
From a Wayne's World like Teen cave
emerges a band
worth posting on friday...

Friday Musik Link, Valentine's Day, Searching for Cafe Society

Happy Valentine's Day
For my Fred....

Now a little story and some music.
Searching for Cafe Society,
True integrated music, art, and pure human bliss,
Down in the Village in NYC,
Still a cultural center,
All these years later.

This morning under a boatload of snow...

I was trying this week to place Khahlil Gibran at the Cafe,
No success yet.

So will post another gem from yt.
In the spirit of Cafe Society...
People all over the world,
Will listen today,
In a nice little club
In NYC.

Im going to post Richard's new movie once I find the link again...this was wonderful..

The Road to Cafe Society....The Story Of Sister Rosetta Tharpe links from YT...BBC

I was taking a google journey in search of Cafe Society.
Pete Seeger was dragging me out of bed saying,
Look around girl,
There is music everywhere...
So I searched quite simply and decided to check out the first videa that came up.
Leave it to the British BBC channel again to draw me in with the sounds,
the bridge to Memphis,
That Mississippi River I know so well
from up stream, St. Louis.
Another brilliant artist sprouted from the hardships of the cotton fields.
Rosetta, a curious name for a truly God sent woman who fearlessly, boldly,
Synthesized a new sound,
born from the fusion of gospel, blues, hardships, pain.
Love of Music, God, and Revival.
Giving an entire generation Hope, and something to tap their feet about.
Giving Rich and Poor music to bring together.
The spirit of Cafe Society,
Blending colors,
finding our commonality.
Enjoy the links....

Sister Rosetta Tharpe....

Leave it to the BBC.

and one more from yt for good measure...

Friday Night Music

Today,
a selection inspired by Cafe Society,
that ground breaking nightclub in NYC,
integrating blacks and whites in the freshness of music,
the cleansing of piano, voice and lyrics
to express ideas.
At the time,
quite controversial.
A friend told me about her Uncle Barney who started a nightclub,
It was called Cafe society.
I found a few links and am far from done with exploring this wonderful night club
that helped found the birth of Greenwich Village,
freedom of speech in the air with poetry,
music, and artwork everywhere.

Café Society

Now, a link to Billie Holiday, who opened Cafe Society as an unknown singer...

and I cannot help but post the YT version I found of Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa performing this from their new album, Seesaw which is nominated for a Grammy.
It was a way of showing you how the music comes around, affects all of us,
and is a way to tell our story, our struggles,
a way to make it right.
Happy Friday.

One live yt link and their official video...wow...
