Redlining

 Revisiting my story,

I had a Dream

https://traveloguefortheuniverse.blogspot.com/2012/01/i-had-dream.html?spref=bl

Today pondering

Redlining

That (once) mysterious explanation for why

Black Neighborhoods are still Black

And

White Neighborhoods are still White.

Their has been changes in the maps,

Incremental changes.

A good lesson for You. Look up Your Town

Look around…

I had a Dream…originally posted in 2010

“Wake up” He said.

Thomas Jefferson put it this way: "...a wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government."

My eyes wouldn't open, I did not want to wake up. This was a dream I told myself.

Of all the people I would like to dream about, he would be in the top 5.
I felt like of all the people I have told my stories to, Thomas Jefferson would probably sit down with me and politely say, can my girl get you something to drink?
Take your time,
now tell me your story.

And I would relax back enjoying the mountain breeze, gazing at his gardens, and I would tell him.
If it was a real dream, he would just google me or tweet or FB or something.

What would he say? Would he think women should own anything? Would he ask me where my husband was and he would just ask him what happened?
Would he let me ask him why he has a girl? What does the girl want? What does she dream?
Maybe he would ask me the same thing.

Dreams are funny things. I still remember some dreams like postcards, or short action clips.
Thomas Jefferson had a dream and yearned to create the best government possible.
Perfection, unfortunately is not possible.
Reality is always a little Off Balance, tending towards entropy, with unsustainable perfection.
So when he woke me up,
I said,
Can I get you something to drink?
Wow, I cannot believe it is you.
I have been to your house and paid to see inside several times and I was impressed.
Your writing, inventions, gardens and philosophy in and out of government is incredible.
Tell me,
how did we do with carrying out your dreams?
Do you want to hear my story?

Then I woke up

My Dream

My Dream

Now a surreal memory,
Dim and clear at the same time.

They stood around
The mighty table.

Men who serve the masters,
No matter which side of the table.

Each man and precious few women
have a part, a vote, a piece of power.

The vote went on for an interminable duration,
Beards long, graying men stood stalwart against their opposition.

They died standing or sitting there, firm in their opinions,
Petrified sculptures, and we slaves all watched in horror.

Waking up, I shook off the dream and
the 6 am radio news played the news of the day.

I Had a Dream

I listened to Martin Luther King's speech again
since I knew he would have it on.
Just as MLK talked about the mountaintops,
a tear came to my eye,
such a perfect speech in form, content,
feeling, message.
The sun came up over the mountains
and I snapped this one, above.

I wanted to tell a story today of my dream.

In the Second grade, I had a dream.
It was 1965 or so.
I had suffered the first grade with learning to play with others,
something I still struggle with.

My 2nd grade teacher was always there, smiling and loving us.
We knew all of us were loved.
The words I was learning to write,
and their meaning.
the words together,
started catching my interest more
and more.

One day, a fellow student
(he is a black child, though I have no idea he is different in anyway)
and I decided we would write a book.
That was one of the most exciting thoughts to me.
A Book,
like the ones on Mom's bookshelf,
like the ones in the library,
like the ones that made people famous,
We made plans to meet after school,
We were writing a
Book.

Fast forward to my neuro appointment last week,
My doctor saying,
"You missed your calling,
you are a good writer"
and me sitting there,
thinking of my little friend
in the second grade
I am 3rd from right in the front row.
Many years later, I saw this photo again and realized he
was the only male black child in my class.

When I announced to my father that I was going to write a book
with this young black child,
My father went ballistic.

That is when I learned what racism was.
I fought with him hard and lost.
I could not go to
that neighborhood...
aka
lower town...

I was so angry with him and have had a little anger in there left.
Still my father grew up in the south side of St Louis
in a German neighborhood. As time went on, urban blight
destroyed some of the neighborhoods. Blamed on black people.
Dad also delivered mail and told me he knew a lot
about people by the mail they received.
That confused me more than reassured me.
Now I know it is a lie.
You really do not know what people are about
by their mail.

I had a dream to write a book,
missed my calling, and gave up a fight with my father,
All while 7 years old.

Today, the dream,
remembered,
through MLK's voice,
resounding,
powerful,
gentle,
real.

My father,
I will always love dearly,
and I forgive,
in all his prejudice,
he was trying to protect me and was there for me.
He did not know it is not the color of a person's skin
that tells their character.
he learned it,
prejudice is learned
and can be
un-learned...

Them is us
We are them
We are all
I have a dream.
