Chocolate Fixes Everything Rerun ❤️

Story 2010

Chocolate fixes everything

Christmas 2010 and people are saying Merry Christmas again, freer
and without hesitation or thought of taking it back or modifying to a happy holiday...
We rode on the ferry to NY to save some money, last minute shopping and got to see the heavy snow on the mountains and moderate levels in the valley. Nice blue sky, calm and cold. New bridge is coming along.
I kept thinking about how, as far back as I remember, that there was no S*nt*. You know who.
It was no mystery to me where the presents came from and how behavior was monitored and the good was rewarded
whether a fat mythical white bearded jolly man or my parents.
My father had to work at the post office delivering mail and packages until late.
He would come home very tired to some wound up kids and a tree with gifts.
We had to be patient and would try to sit still and not get in trouble.
When he walked in the door, he always had a big box of chocolate called
Mavrakos. I assume that was the family name but it was exquisite big triangular chunks
of pure chocolate. I could not wait to break of a triangle and start gnawing.
Soon the floor would be a sea of paper and we would be fondling our take.
Mom's and Sis's cookies on plates all around.
The tree with the old ornaments.
These memories come back when I picked up a couple of chocolate bars.
Dad figuring, even though he had to work late,
That chocolate would fix everything.
Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas! πŸŽ„πŸŽ

 Memories…I wrote this 9 years ago… πŸ„

A Christmas Tail

Monkton Chronicles

By Mary E Gerdt 2013

My first Christmas away from Illinois was in frozen Monkton, Vermont.
I moved here after urging by my roommate who subsequently left the material plane, leaving me no option but to carry forth our dream.
My new home was an apartment above a garage next door to a large dairy barn.
I was eager to see all the sights there, on an Addison County dairy farm as they were in 1981.
My new roommate milked cows and she left for Christmas holiday.
My inner city girl pined a little as I looked out at the drifting snow and watched the farmhands haul hay to the barn and haul the manure away.
The milk truck came.
Then nothing. No sound. Quiet...
I had never heard that before.

I went down to talk to the farmhand. His weathered face, his Vermont dialect, some words I missed,
I had to utilize what I call word averaging. Nod, Nod to get him to talk. But beware you don't want to nod indiscriminantly and accidentally agree to something self incriminating.
My questions were all about cows, what do they eat, do they kick? Are they smart?
The farmhand enjoyed being the expert and sharing his understanding of the world.

Around Christmas, the subject came up somehow.
"They kneel down," he said.
"What?" I sensed a profound moment coming...
"The cows, they kneel down at midnight on Christmas."
"What?" I said, longer, with my eyes closed, as if that could focus my inner vision.
Thus ensued a back and forth verbal dance with him playing me and me playing along.
I did not believe him...yet I did not want to refute this man, salt of the earth.

So I carried on, trying to stay warm, writing letters, trying to stay busy.
On Christmas eve, all alone,
the darkness came so early up this far north.
I had to,
I had to sneak down to the barn,
at midnight.

Why do barns look so different at night?
The creaky door handles are oiled last.
I hoped no dog would start barking.
My weak flashlight did not help much.
all the time me wondering why I was doing this.

I had to go downstairs to the main barn.
all the while my anxiety building,
it was so dark.
The cows patiently nodding in their stanchions,
chewing,
sleeping.
were they kneeling?

Well truth be told that is when I lost my nerve,
my path of least resistance was straight back out of the barn
and straight into my warm humble bed,
having faith those cows were all kneeling down
like Walt had said,
in the barn
on Christmas
at midnight πŸ™πŸΌπŸŽ„πŸŽ

Notes: this Week I stumbled onto this story about Walt.
As I described the Story to Friends Whose Farm I lived at,
Maggie told Me Walt died about a week ago.
Rest in Peace, Walter ❤️

Christmas with #Meela

Meela, our new cat since July 4th continues to test our devotion and our flexibility. We started to put up our metal tree but Meela started right off to destroy it.

So Fred went out and got a little tree that we can plant outside when holidays are over. Meela won out.

Christmas at our New Home

It’s been a long road,

Moving to our new home
Southern hospitality everywhere
Telling me we did the right move.
Still missing my little Cat Tommy Who left the material plane
Just before we departed
18 years we had him
Or he had us.
So when I unpacked and disentangled the Christmas Tree πŸŽ„
Then assembled it
I thought of Tommy.
Fred and I are happy in our new nest
And the Christmas lights shine on memories,
Ornaments
Our history together
All these years.
The daylight diminishes
Soon to gain again.
Have a special Solstice
Just around the corner of Time.

The Tree came down today...is it Friday?

I went into a micro panic...
Kept forgetting all day
I need Musik for Friday night!
The Tree came down, I swept up the leavings.
Then remembered Macseal posted a Christmas video...
I thought, it kind of fits with today.
The Tree came down today.
And yet,
Sometimes I wish it was Christmas,
We don't want for much,
And others have none,

.and others are kids making fun videos,
Check these guys out

Immortal Christmas (Sock Puppet Parody)

Oh yes,

I rely on YT for content some days  weeks intervals
so that my readers hopefully will remember to come back periodically
and so I can go back tosome other activity.
This is essential to writing what amounts to a daily column.
It can be quite easy some days
Some days I rack up some videos for later.
I always preview and the few time I did not,
it was disastrous in my nit picking mind.
No one else probably noticed.
That is actually an up side to all this social media activity.
Enjoy the video link.
Xmas 6 days away...
