then there is a gradual downward decline in daylight hours until
just before Christmas.

Maybe a lot of people only know this occurrence as the start of summer here in the Northern Hemisphere. We have a low key celebration for summer solstice, usually with a bbq and dinner eaten outside, then a bonfire in the evening.
