Starling Morning

The starlings got up early,
and the sun did too,
the days are getting longer,
 the starling has his brood.
The summer barely started,
we got a cold cold wind
And the starlings make their noises
some would call a din.

But listen to the starling song, a sweet
and mournful song
They sing a song for their place on earth
Who could say they are wrong.

Starlings are not the most beautiful bird,
some would say they are ugly
But ugly birds can sing a song
and how could that ever be wrong,
Beauty is in our head and hearts.

The starlings sings again.

  1. I love the noise of starlings- is the collective noun a murmeration of starlings? I guess some Americans might feel a bit funny about them because they are not native but for me the sound of starlings waking up in the eves of our house is how summer days started in my childhood. As for ugly, just look a little longer, wonderful iridescent feathers - and they are great mimics- they had my neighbour rushing to answer his telephone when he had an electronic ring (hi tech in the 70s) phone. I love to watch a mob of them working the neighbourhood.
    Thanks for the poem.

  2. Thanks Richie for the memories and pointing out this special bird's virtues. I did not realize that they mimic-no wonder we keep hearing weird noises. They are pretty with the iridescent feathers and amazing flyers when they flock in the fall.Mary

"Nice, I actually like to watch starlings - jet'black dotted with a pallette of colors"

    Thanks Julie!
