Early Spring

Early Spring

Addison County, Vermont

What a cold winter we had.
Cold lingering into early spring.

The flat stretches are characteristic of Addison County.
Once the old Seabed of The Champlain Sea,
Now special farmland.

Talking to my Brother

It was during the Vietnam war.
I was ten. My brother went to war.
My heart was heavy every minute he was there.

My wish came true,
My brother called from Vietnam.
Communication not so easy back then. Letters mostly.

It was not as easy as I thought.
I had to say,"over" after each sentence.
Each sentence starting with my mouth open and nothing coming out.
What can I say?
Stage fright.

A memory,
My Mom at my side urging me, "talk, talk."

Zentangle Lesson #4

Zentangle

Lesson #4

For Sharry, wherever you are...
For Debbie, for giving me the book and sharpies :-)

Each lesson builds upon the prior lessons,
The carryover fun to watch in other art I have done too.
Teaching me depth, shading, letting go.
Meditative, relaxing.
Each lesson a day in the book. Sometimes Takes me months.

Dad

Second edition...first post had duplicate YouTube links....meg

Dad

Yesterday the call came,
I felt a let down,
a relief,
a tear and a smile
and
numbness,
what is next?

92 plus,
Overall,
His age and health
Was on the North side
of good.

It will take awhile for me to fully process,
That he's not there anymore,
At that town where
I was born,
Held in Dad's arms,
Then passed around the family of those days,
and back to Mom.

Then I left that town,
Thinking I would return,
Seeing my parents less than I would like,
More noticeable as my parents went off, together,
Starting their next adventure,
They are free.

Last night had to tweet:

Mom & Dad Alaskan Cruise

and some music links for Friday
that Dad introduced me to...

Horse Hair Saloon

Horse Hair Saloon

No other way to describe it,
It was  a nightclub out in the desert.
Girls a little homely but they seemed to enjoy their work.

Sugaring Season

Sugaring Season

A magical process,
Highly underrated,
No doubt not completely understood,
Whereby humans interact with trees to harvest that
Delightful, Delicate, Delicious
Elixir.

Nothing like the real thing,
Full of trace nutrients
Chosen by the wise Sugar Maples.

Freezing weather required (done :<{},
then March days
above freezing.

So many factors coalesce
To make that sweet spring treat.

Seeing signs for Sugar houses open in Vermont.
Sap gathering,
Boiling,
Sugar on snow,
A magical time.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Meg

Fall maples

Maple sap,
Go ahead, drink it like the  old people did.
Watch the quantity...moderation.
Never steal sap,
Don't be a Sap Jacker!

Sap buckets on maples
Roads beginning to thaw.

Eagles

Eagles have a hard life.
I saw a bald eagle in a meadow yesterday. Excited to see him,
Food scarce this year,
I hoped he had enough to eat.

Evolution

Evolution
One scenario

At the risk of sounding contrary to "mainstream science"
My pondering led me to question Darwin.
Was he really all 100% Right?
Why would a monkey change into a human?
Is it adaptation?
Genetic mistake?
Are birds little dinosaurs?

Mom's Dad

Mom's Dad

One of the few photos of Mom as a little girl she had a sad look.
I imagined it was.because her father died, when Mom was 5.
The photographer took pictures to mark events, birth, weddings, funerals.

Hearing Mom's Dad was a professional,
Started this drawing
He probably took the streetcar.
Mom waiting for him to come home.

In 1930 ish...

Kefir

Kefir

Yes it is worth making

Or rather
Cultivating kefir
Every day

My journey started long ago,
When my sister gave me some
Kefir.
Lately I've been craving kefir.
Oh, the price!

We read more about
Probiotics,
Beneficial organisms
We should have in our bodies.

Fred got me starter kefir grains
From

The people there were also quite helpful on my uncertain path.
I did get the hang of it and enjoy daily kefir

I was inspired to make several drawings
About this
Manna
Which
No doubt comes
From a higher power.

Heroes and Freedom

Heroes and Freedom

Yesterday was town meeting in Monkton,Vermont
And the other towns across the state.

We managed to vote absentee,
Fred took the ballots to the often closed town office.

Yesterday,
I thought about going,
Then couldn't, wouldn't, didn't go.

I ended up at the doctor's office, my home away from home.
The 20 dollar copay worth it.

No matter the circumstances,
I decided
I couldn't go.

Oh yes, the catch 22 of New England town meeting.
Fashioned after Quaker town meeting,
Separation church and state?....nah, it's too quaint. Must be preserved.
Using military Roberts Rules
And
 we are all peaceable,
Until we are disagreed with.

Aye, nay, pass, fail.
The voters present voice vote millions to be milked from taxpayers,
Like myself,
It still didn't motivate me to face those people,
Those people who vote,
Proudly, loudly.
While I cannot.

No character flaw ,
I was learning,
Insisting to myself,
I am only  one.
If the meeting makes me sick,
I learned long ago I am not alone in any emotion.
Someday it Will change,
Not yesterday.

I listened instead to the leader of Israel
And
Heard his message,
A Heroes' message.

The Hero,
Maligned by select crabby politicians
And
Their mouthpieces,
Teaching me
 the lesson  of keeping calm,
Deliberate,
Not a speck
Of ambivalence,
While delivering basic information
And the plan of action.

My plan of action
Was to first heal my wounds,
Visible
And
Invisible.

The town report sat on the kitchen table.
I didn't even peek at it  this year.
Never looked up the corrections posted somewhere.

I am done with town meeting,
The quaint community lunch
The polite conversation,
The dagger eyes
I remembered from a past life.

No more yeah and nay
And you can't
Or we won't
Or
You aren't from around here are you?

My oblivion will cost me
Freedom.
The freedom to vote, one person,
One vote.
The taxed vote.

It will be up to the future residents
Of
 Monkton,Vermont,
To find their heroes,
To plot their own course.

For me, resignation fits my mood.
So if 10 percent decides the affairs of the town,
Eventually the 90% will rebel.
I will be heading south.
