She was one of the best teachers I ever had. She was the first person I knew who had a southern accent, which took me a while to get used to. After my first day at school, I asked my mother why Mrs. Newland pronounced "I can" as "Ah kin." I did some searching online, and found that she was born in North Little Rock in 1917 and she died in Dunedin, Florida in 2001.
