A Lifetime With Levon - Memphis Magazine - March 2013 - Memphis

Levon Helm Tribute

A cleansing breath sorely needed.
Stirring up past losses, failed conquests, well, it just demands
a turning to the real life things that matter, like a
link to a Tribute to Levon lovingly done by Warren Haines & Band.
It was weird that the last letter I posted #5 occurred at about the same time November 2009 as we got invited to a once in a lifetime Special Midnight Ramble. That was when we saw Kris Kristofferson et many more... at Levon's barn. No more than 200 people hearing and experiencing such a rare concert.
I really took it as a sign at the time of better days. It was like Levon had his Rambles and we went for what I called a "healing". The barn has an intimate quality like no other. At the same time we both read This Wheel's on Fire by Levon Helm, the honest and fascinating story of that man whose eyes sparkle and shine. Levon talked about his childhood's family trouble when the bank "papered them" and what did that mean? They must have called in the loan? And I realized no matter how smart or powerful you think you are, we are all vulnerable to a certain element of greed.
I hope you would consider helping Levon's family and friends save his barn.
Or perhaps you are near Woodstock, NY and want to experience an intense musical venue you will never forget.
Or you want to order the new release Love for Levon...incredible multiple cd/dvd pkg...

Wow Warren Haynes and band link on yt...

Dreaming of Springtime in Vermont

if you do not like political stuff, enjoy the photo above and stop reading right now :-)

#5

Will be the last in this series.
The beginning of my age of true disillusionment.
Can already hear some of you sighing, the politically adverse segment of the population
how i wish i could be there somedays.
These are my feelings about town government & powers they have.
My true life experience in 2009 of nearly losing my properties.
What did not work for me to regain some sense of dignity or righteousness.
The brochure online about rights of taxpayers really doesn't cover the half of it.
In truth, towns can be more powerful than banks.
This has happened before and it could happen to you.
This was a letter I sent the town when I found out what they did.

fyi afterword...i have never received any of this information. meg 3.25.13

Subject: To the selectboard
To: admin@monktonvt.com

Pleases deliver To the Selectboard of the Town of Monkton,

From Mary E. Gerdt, 40 Cemetery Rd, Monkton (mailing address North Ferrisburg, VT).

I requested some information from David Rath, your attorney.

I have not received it.

I now request it from the Selectboard.

Please send me the following by US Mail

addressed to Mary E. Gerdt, 40 Cemetery Rd, No. Ferrisburg, VT 05473

I want to have all the documents the Town of Monkton has related to the tax sale of real estate property I own.

I want copies of the actual minutes where my property was described and this was discussed.

I want copies of the accounting of the Town Tax Collector, records of his phone calls, attempts to contact me or my husband.

I want copies of receipts of any mail sent to me or my husband.

I want you to tell me how many people are presently in arrears in taxes.

I want to know how you decided to choose us.

I want to know who had abatement of taxes.

I want a copy of what went into the newspaper which I never saw.

I do not feel comfortable at the town hall anymore.

My emails about minutes all summer apparently were in vain since when you finally decided to post them, all I saw was "tax sale". My suggestion to you is to be more open about this process to the actual owners. I wonder how many of my neighbors knew and I had no idea.

I am serious that I want all these documents. Do not ignore this request.

Mary Gerdt

Hello Ellen Tofferi,

I contacted Secretary if State Deb Markowitz about some issues I have related to a "tax sale" of my property.

She suggested you might know some answers to my questions related to property taxes.

My husband was supposed to pay the property taxes last year. He used a check from an account the bank closed after we refinanced due to my husband losing his job and general hard times.

When the check bounced, we were assessed 8 percent that day.

My husband, in good faith at the time felt we could pay it by the following November.

He errantly did not tell me any of this, but neither did anyone else.

After only 9 months arrears in taxes and no notice to me, a female co-owner wife citizen of Monkton, the town threatened to sell something we own for the taxes. I have yet to see the document the town lawyer drew up. He was an old attorney of ours and I feel he should have tried to find me or the tax collector or someone.

The property taxes are in my understanding, partially state mandated and there are many guidelines for municipalities to follow.

There is however apparently no recourse for me but to hire an attorney or go to the newspapers and tell the rest of the "minor" landowners to watch out for the tax man.

There are other properties in town as recently as 2007 that were 5 years in arrears.

I was never notified of my right to abatement, appeal, or to be appointed a guardian if I was babbling in the cellar.

Any light you could shed would be welcome,

Thanks,

Mary Gerdt

Fives....lots of Fives....& Virtual Neighborhood...

Fives, Dang a lot of fives came together today...

me 55, born in 58, 5th child, on the 25th, mom born in 25...it seemed like a lot,
Or was I just looking for meanings and there was all this coincidence?
anyway, we are now part of a "virtual neighborhood". It is a listserv of town residents. When I close my eyes I still see the houses of the neighbors of my youth,The Pfeiffers, The Stahlhuts, The Jennings', The Kuethes', Braziers, and many more...
Now with a new found outlet to speak to my neighbors I have not know for the 30 years I have lived in the neighborhood, have been wanting to connect about a few issues I find imperative. So I wrote the entry below and thought I would log it in my blog as a time marker. Hoping for change but not counting on the change being what I want. Just something better.
If I get no response, OK, I will stick with sharing feelings with my worldwide web of bloggers, friends, musicians, artists, photographers, activists, and fellow poets. If I get a response, perhaps I will finally feel I have arrived at a neighborhood. If positive, a kindred neighborhood. If negative, well, sorry, I am entitled to feel however I feel.
If something here offends you, just push the I/o button in the o direction.
mary e. gerdt,
over the hill of 55,
55 trips around the sun.
God do I miss Mom at times like this...

Pipelines, Notices to Residents & Delinquent Tax Collection

I fully support everything Jane and Nate Palmer say...and I hope other Monkton residents will stand there too. It is unfortunate the black suited lawyers and lobbyists seem to have all the power, eh? This proposed pipeline (anybody see a map yet?), is being crammed down our throats by a Canadian conglomerate to feed a rich college town and a paper mill That Already Gets Gas!!!
They want a 2 way RACEWAY...anybody get the visual?
Meanwhile the Selectboard seems to passively yawn which leads me to believe they have blessed this.
So why do we pay all the conservation taxes and taxpayers pay to preserve land if we are just going to become, let's face it, Transmission Fields...WRONG, all Wrong!
Why not criminal charges or sanction for what looked like deceptive practices against our great and vulnerable neighbors.
It makes me sick to think the town would let them stomp people like them.
Next, have you experienced not being noticed by the town for a meeting or a application/permit that you had a right to know/be at? Let's change that.
Next, have you been the victim of a delinquent tax sale in Monkton where there are questions about the proper procedure or even, is this like other towns do it? If enough people connected who are as disgruntled as I have been, perhaps we could really change this Draconian, 6 months late, we sell your property thing.
I was told it would never change. Don't do well with never.
Next, I will be publishing all the letters I have sent the town on my blog. It can be a test of, well, what works, what doesn't. Is anyone as frustrated as I am? Or, Mary you are all wet! Ok. I am a big girl (no comments). I can take criticism. Likewise, if others feel like I do, the front porch is truly helping me feel part of a neighborhood and have hope we can connect even though you may be a couple hills over. I hope if there is common sense, ethical reform possible, I hope we can recreate the kind of town Everyone wants to be a part of. Not just the Yellers, the Bullys, the This, the That. The Pipeline people? Ran roughshod over this town. Ripe for the picking I would say. Can the Selectboard choose to engage in fights for the little people instead of looking for new zoning restrictions? Can we put a moratorium on going after people like gravel diggers? (I could have used some local gravel when my driveway washed away).and people too poor to pay taxes this year...instead of raise taxes and shorten tolerance.

For Mom

For Mom, and Katie, and Jesses, and other friends and family I have lost...

Hello,

My name is Mary Gerdt. I read your paper regularly online.

I did however hear a rumor your newspaper printed one or several legal notices in the Pay newspaper to sell some or all of my Monkton property at a tax sale. I am eager to see what this looked like and what they were selling. Also how many times and dates of publication.

I was never noticed about this in any way. My husband, wishing to protect me, paid the bill but the damage to my reputation remains, without my knowing.

I wonder how any of you would feel if this happened. I do not want this in the newspaper until I better understand what happened. Could you send me an image of the legal notice you posted? Are you aware that a town may sell your property without so much as a courtesy call?

And publicly humiliate you by publishing "tax sale" after being 9 months arrears when others seem to have 5 years of back bills.

I am searching for truth and wish no more public posting of my name without my knowledge.

Sincerely,

Psalm Challenge 96

Psalm 96

King James Version (KJV)

96 O sing unto the Lord a new song: sing unto the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day.

3 Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.
4 For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens.

6 Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7 Give unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lord glory and strength.
8 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts.
9 O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.

10 Say among the heathen that the Lord reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously.
11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof.

12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice
13 Before the Lord: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.

the world really is pretty amazing
even without the humans
or in spite of the humans
it is not up to us to judge or right the wrongs.
The stars, mountains, moons, trees and seas are all special,
We are thankful.

Picking the Rules & Dancing with Angels

I sat down in earnest to study the 96 Psalm so I can write a post in time to post tomorrow EU time.
That has become my framework, my own rule, or schedule, self expectation.
Then I drifted from email to FB to twitter which has become flocks of people voices chirping this, then that, sometimes echoing, retweeting.
Read some of Ann & the Angels which means the angels she channels. Stumbled onto Robin Miller, YT link above, whose music really kind of pulls down some of the cobwebs in your soul.
I cannot tell you how I can or why I can say that, maybe it is the idyllic Sedona setting,
the Sycamore trees, the messages..Dancing with angels like when you were an innocent child.
Could not resist just posting this and doing my research later.
Doing away with the human made rules when it come to Angels,
I think they really laugh at Human made rules...
Go buy some of Robin's music...Very Soothing!

Love for Levon

Virgil Caine,
Golden Eagle
Several years ago, We were gifted the co-adoption of Virgil Caine,
Golden Eagle who flies up and down the Eastern states.
She is a symbol of rugged power, like Levon Helm.
So right off, if you read no further, go to his website and buy
music, shirts, anything to help save his barn venue as he wished.
Just out:
The Love for Levon concert at Izod center.
2 cd's, 2 dvd's, many photos, interviews.
I saw the UPS tracks in the driveway, my birthday gift early.
Wanted to wait and held out for about 10 minutes
Then Fred opened the package and we started watching
this amazing concert..then I remember live tweeting during the concert
or was I mostly re-tweeting? Will have to look to find them.
Go on, buy the love for levon set through their website:

And found this link below to a great review article...

If you are still with me,
my review?

Each musician a star
a shining bright star of energy,
together a constellation,
feeling a loss
so complete,
losing a mentor shaman
all around hardworking
good guy,
he left this world a better place,
the music, in this video, from the beginning,
tight, together, crisp, clear, heartfelt, matching songs to the people
who came to sing their tribute
one by one stepping up to the microphone,
biting their inner lip to keep from crying when they get to that part.
you know especially musicians have feelings,
it is a small price to pay for this amazingly performances, recorded, mixed,
produced, polished and most of all,
a directive from Levon: Keep it Goin'
Keep the Midnight Rambles in his barn going.
The most amazing concerts I have been to,
We now can experience the great photography, videography, musical talents
all in a tribute to a man who was clearly in the vicinity, and in the hearts of each of these
musicians and fans who adore that powerful force,
We have had all expectations exceeded by a country mile...

Lighthouse

Lighthouse

There is no light on in the lighthouse
tonight.
And the woman who lived there
tonight,
Left the Plane of Understanding
and then,
She came back and turned off the light,
The end.

The light was on,
Then gone again,
Lighting up,
The Human Plane,

When the light went out
forever,
The weary woman swam
to the tide.

From the Twitter feed,
The Fragile Oasis,
Mom used to point to the sky
on a clear night
when we were out in the country
at her cousin's or friends,
it would be late and
we got in some good visiting,
and she would say,
and say so reverently,
The Milky Way.

now I do, too and pray we may always see our milky home of stars...

A Wicked Wind

A Wicked Wind

blew all day
pushing the heat from our house,
spring weather no less bitter feeling than deep winter,
maybe it's the return of sunlight, begging us to come out,
the wicked wind pushing me back inside to do tedious tax paperwork.
it takes all day to assemble the stack the accountant still has to go through.
why not a flat tax?
Going through last year's box,
Traces of my mother, crossing over and leaving memories.
Then the tickets to see Levon.
thinking those two and Captain too would get along.

Yes Vermont Yankee: Voices for Vermont Yankee: Our New E-Book Supporting the Plant

Yes Vermont Yankee: Voices for Vermont Yankee: Our New E-Book Supporting the Plant

From Meredith Angwin, my go to woman for Non emotional Nuclear Information.
Yes, there is another side to VT Yankee.

For my skeptical readers...
It may seem funny to you that I would oppose a gas pipeline and support VT Yankee.
I know it sounds or looks a little nimby...

Here are my points...

Gas pipeline-not here yet, they refuse to serve our town with gas, or the school, etc. They already used heavy hand towards neighbors, and hey, I need to check our swamp deed to see if they were supposed to notice us. That is how close it is. A mile. That is so close if it blows, I will see it. It could hurt people over there, so close.
It is to serve Middlebury, a wealthy college town, and a paper mill on the other side of the lake.
They could not burn tires since it poured mercury into the air, so, let's run them a natural gas line.
Monkton Scool will not even be able to tap in, I will not, no Monkton people will.
Really??
No map has come out yet. I had to pre-emptively complain because I do not know what is happening.
Does Lack of transparency sound familiar?
I need to raise awareness, this thing is being crammed down our throats and referred to as progressive by the Middlebury people...hey, Sure it is not running through their back yard to go somewhere else.
Hard to get anybody upset about a gas pipeline.
I felt bad the neighbors with their lone voices. No media support really.
Guess there are subtle differences in scenarios which give rise to us seeming to contradict ourselves.
I wrestle with that concept myself, being both pro environmental mixed with common sense science, evidence based reasoning, leading to a fair and ethical balanced conclusion.

I will leave the nuclear arguments to Meredith.
I had to determine my own values about the gas pipeline and fight it the only way I can, by words.

Psalm Challenge 94

When I studied 94 briefly,
it is certainly not a light subject.
A Prayer to have the wrongs righted. By God.
So when I thought of music, this tune came to mind.
Found this link on you tube by Anthony Pepitone.
Heaven's Pearls, sung by the songwriter Byron Isaacs and Amy Helm and her band et al.
We saw Amy and Byron last weekend in Burlington.
Still cannot quite believe it. So after we saw them I googled Byron because I was paranoid I spelled his name wrong when I blogged. I have been known to spell my name wrong when tired.
Byron wrote this song which was good to clarify in my mind. I thought it was some ancient Appalachian hills music. When times are tough it is good to remind yourself
there will be a pearl at the end of the trials. You do not need to be vengeful,
God will deal with it for you.
It is all part of having faith,

The Psalms
94

A Prayer for Vengeance
1 O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth;
O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, show thyself.
2 Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth:
render a reward to the proud.
3 LORD, how long shall the wicked,
how long shall the wicked triumph?
4 How long shall they utter and speak hard things?
and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?
5 They break in pieces thy people, O LORD,
and afflict thine heritage.
6 They slay the widow and the stranger,
and murder the fatherless.
7 Yet they say, The LORD shall not see,
neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.
8 Understand, ye brutish among the people:
and ye fools, when will ye be wise?
9 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear?
He that formed the eye, shall he not see?
10 He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct?
He that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?
11 The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man,
that they are vanity. 1 Cor. 3.20
12 Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD,
and teachest him out of thy law;
13 that thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity,
until the pit be digged for the wicked.
14 For the LORD will not cast off his people,
neither will he forsake his inheritance.
15 But judgment shall return unto righteousness:
and all the upright in heart shall follow it.
16 Who will rise up for me against the evildoers?
Or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?
17 Unless the LORD had been my help,
my soul had almost dwelt in silence.
18 When I said, My foot slippeth;
thy mercy, O LORD, held me up.
19 In the multitude of my thoughts within me
thy comforts delight my soul.
20 Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee,
which frameth mischief by a law?
21 They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous,
and condemn the innocent blood.
22 But the LORD is my defense;
and my God is the rock of my refuge.
23 And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity,
and shall cut them off in their own wickedness;
yea, the LORD our God shall cut them off.

Just incredible,
I am in awe.

The View

The View
is in the news
and I close my eyes
hear the playground
Screech!
you know The kind that pierces your heart and it skips a beat?

And the girls
over
There There There,
they're looking at me

And I want to be with
Them
and I want to be true to myself
when a trickle goes down my leg
i lost my urine.

The girls giggle
just out of earshot

I take the scratchy brown towels
in the lavaratory
and try to clean myself before class
The smell still there.

The girls with their view.
Look at her. If they had invited me
would it have been on their terms?
today @ 54 years old i see they did me a favor,
made me find my own way.

So there is some irony in the story...
They never knew I was them.
Or that i hoped for them
the tolerance i fought so hard
to find.
After my anger and shame crested and receded,
my silence covered the wound like a scab.
Here i am today
the wash post picked the scab on my MS scars

(Really wish they would not pick on Ann Romney. She is just a girl like me with MS and a loving husband...oh yes, and a view) meg

Blogging forward: Yes Vermont Yankee: Guest Post: Hallquist on Wind and the Grid

Blogging Forward from Meredith Angwin's Blog.
If you follow energy info...
Then wondering about natural gas...running pipelines through wildlands and people's gardens.
In the end is it all worth it?

Yes Vermont Yankee: Guest Post: Hallquist on Wind and the Grid: David Hallquist is the Chief Executive Officer of the Vermont Electric Cooperative (VEC).  Like most co-operatives, VEC is owned by its rate...

Water Bears

Link to great article about Water Bears

http://sciencesourcenews.blogspot.com/2013/03/astronomy-picture-of-day-water-bear.html

Kept meaning all day to check out
these mysterious images on
astronomy pic of the day
sort of like a platypus or a bear or a rock
or...aliens?
1mm in length?
Do they watch us
as we walk through the woods
them living in their mossy home?

The claws like cats
strange snout
extremophilic
cute little
bear
6 legged bear,
space traveling
alien?

James Mullaney "Edgar Cayce & The Universe" Main Show + Calls

Clearing the cosmic dust

Town Meeting Day Blues

Town Meeting Day Blues

Went to bed last night,
Dreamt out of the blue,
People came together,
Not just a few.

Each stood up,
Said a word,
Then on to the next,
Til everyone was heard,
Not just the best.

Good and bad,
Big and small,
Every size imagined,
Every height,
No matter how tall.

The people said
How they felt of the taxes,
That took their life savings,
That threatened their species,
And all could listen,
Consider each story,
The hardships, the pains.

Instead I saw the faces,
terrified to speak,
or voting in a great chorus,
afraid to stand out.

Others spoke,
so smooth like silk,
Others trembling voices like mine,
at the door of Oz.

I am staying home today,
Voted absent,
Paper votes.
Leaving the verbal spar to those
with intact neuroimmune systems.
Mine is plum worn out.

sorry,
my dream did not come true
and not all poetry rhymes....

adding a painting too
called
Big Red goes to Town meeting...

Amy Helm

.... ain't that good news!

Deja vu, just keeps coming back to me....

Long Ago

I was in high school, ouch, that hurt.
We lived in
Nowheresville, or Squareville, or Not Chi town or NYC or LA which was hip,
No we lived in little old Edwardsville, Illinois.
Crossroads of the flat lands, Route 66 right through the heart of town.
They started a University there and the cultural blend of
the original settler farmers, laborers, miners, immigrants and
University people was an interesting mix to say the least.
One thing everyone had in common was a love of Ethanol and a love of Music.
The Mississippi River Festival was born out of an inspiration
explained in this book (pictured with a book about the Cahokia Mounds people)
Levon Helm mentions this in his book, This Wheel's on Fire.
(He thought he was in Missouri, I think), It is actually Illinois.
bear with me i have a point somewhere in here
Back then, The Band did a concert there. I missed that one because I was too young...by just a tiny bit.
People do however still talk about that concert, circa 1975??
(I sent Donna back the book that she loaned to me).

There were a million concerts there it seemed, all big names, solid stars even now.
A delightful outdoor venue with perfect acoustics, natural amphitheater and energetic booking staff.
With all that, they still talk about that "The Band" concert.
That is because Bob Dylan stayed at a $5 a night flea bag motel just outside of town and in perfect stealth mode, was undetected by the throng of fans. He hitched a ride to the concert?
or is that part of the myth?
He went and walked on stage with The Band,
and the drummer was Levon Helm,
Amy Helm's father.

Forever after that, we would drive by the motel and think about how these guys
all had fun with us for a change. Raising their level of fame in our hearts, our adoration of them.
They walked among us, they know the common man, we breathe the same air.
Just like their music did...

Fast forward to
2013
we never thought past 2001 space odyssey,

Fred and I reminisice on Levon concerts we have been to, the Rambles, grateful we went ahead and made the leap to buy tickets we could not afford to see the greatest show on Earth, the Midnight Rambles at Levon's barn, house, studio in Woodstock, NY, the epicenter of what came after the Mississippi River Festival which gave me, a flatlander, a shot in the arm and Nowheresville became somewhere we wanted to be.

In 1981 I moved up here, to beautiful Vermont.
Always aching for shows like those I saw as a teenager at the MRF.
We found them and more...with The Midnight Rambles and Levon Helm concerts.
We even saw The Band at a local barn.

The Rambles, foot tapping, clapping, smiling, laughing,
me remembering the sights and sounds of acoustically perfect night,
Levon's infectious smile and dedication, drive, inspiration.

Behind all that, that fragile man of steel,
is
Amy Helm.

We saw her last night, in a small venue
Higher Ground, in South Burlington, Vermont, USA.
We knew she was coming because we follow her on fb as well as
and the midnight ramble news on

We love her Dad so much.
We love that Amy loved him so much and helped him do what he wanted to do, Sing.
and Byron Isaacs, the Bass/Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter,
he used to look at Levon with an outward beam of Loving energy-
we saw it close up.
We saw Amy's concern and caring for him
which made all the difference.

Last night we heard and saw Amy doing that thing her Dad did.
She was putting it all together, the glue, the looks,
the sound,
all together.
No one competing,
A special night. Byron there too,
humble talented people.

As a man went up on stage I thought he was someone of fame,
feeling ignorant again of even locally famous people of music that
I have had no connections to at all. (correction by indirect remote association :) my husband went to grade school with Mr. Lavoie, the harmonica player. I did not know Aaron Flinn
or the Phish bass player Gordon)

All I know is this will be a concert talked about for a long time,
and people may wonder how we happened to stumble onto front row seats,
and all I can say is thanks to the Universe for last night.
We will always remember it.
